Camper InteriorsRocky Mountain Westy - what to look for when buying a Vanagon Westfalia camper or

Hello to all you Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia and the fans. We here at Rocky Mountain Westy have decided to start publishing articles that help answer questions that we receive from customers all the time. Frequently asked questions about what it takes for your market to buy a Volkswagen Vanagon and Westfalia. Let's start there and we'll write more articles for you all that we can.

As most of you know Vanagon Volkswagen was manufacturered from 1980 to 1991. Different versions of the United States have included the van-style passenger Weekender camper, the camper Westfalia Wolfsburg and Carat Editions. We will break these models as low as we continue.

Models from 1980 to mid 1983 were air-cooled versions of the van Q3. They did not have any grid that allows the air to the radiator and the end of 1983 through 1991 U.S. models. It is an easy way to tell if you're standing in front Vanagon model air-cooled or not. The first models in 1985 also had round headlights. It's a dead give away if anyone else has not changed. Many people will buy a grill and a projector system in 1986 or newer vehicle to give their old Vanagon seem to be much higher. The projector squares are clearer too.

Air cooled models of the Vanagon Westfalia and do not produce very good warmth inside the van as there is no cooling system to run coolant through a radiator like the newer versions. If you like a hot hot, you do not want to buy one that is before 1984.

Water cooled models or "Wasserboxer" came on the market for the U.S. in late 1983 and sported a 1.9 liter engine with a digital or Digijet Jet-Tronic system fuel management. This model also included a few options including a nicer interior, tachometer, and a better transmission. Outside the spotlight is now rectangular, plastic bumpers and alloy wheels are also options. Vanagon The 1986 also includes a better system optional air conditioning system that had led aircraft style on the length of the vehicle roof, the patterns of tourism.

The automatic transmission is available in models from 1980 to 1991 Vanagon. Some say that the automatic transmission has been more difficult than the manual transmission because until the 1990 model year, the hub 3 / 4 speed synchro slider was a misconception. This sometimes caused handed down to the manual to get stuck in 3rd or 4th gear. We believe that for sheer longevity, the manual transmission is still a better choice.

The model Syncro four wheel drive van was available from 1985 to 1992. These models are highly sout after and can be exremely expensive to buy now. Versions of Syncro camper in very good condition can bring over $ 100,000 U.S.. Many people now buy Syncros style passenger and pay for the cut top it off and replaced by a roof top camper pop. It is an expensive adaptation coming in at about $ 7,000 by the time everything is done. Remember, this does not include camping and cabinets, beds, sink, stove or refrigerator. You must find a donor for this Westy. However, some people must have a motorhome 4WD Vanagon for their outdoor adventures. Honestly, we find that slightly lifted two wheel drive cars are about 90% of the places you'll ever. It also saves you tens of thousands of dollars for groceries and gas during your camping trips. Do not get me wrong, Syncro camper is a very cool and useful vehicle. It is beyond the reach of most peoples price for a van of 20 years.

Syncros must be provided at the front and rear diff locks, as the differential housing is not so strong, and are subject to failure if the loads are carried. The diff locks help prevent wheel spin in off-road conditions and help overcome the limited axle articulation. Make sure you buy a syncro has protected.
