In the hills of the Smoky plains of North Central High near Phillipsburg, Kirwin National Wildlife Refuge was Kansas' first such federal sanctuary. Sand Hills State Park is a unique attraction in south-central north of Hutchinson, Kansas. With a series of dunes forty dating from the end of the ice age, the prairie sand was formed when winds deposited sand from the Arkansas River. The sand hills were then anchored by the roots of native prairie grasses, appear more typical East Coast American territory average. Amazingly life, vegetation inland dune area is decorated with grasses, sedges, shrubs and wildflowers loans colors of lavender, gold, green and purple to the landscape.
