In the auto industry, ‘eco’ is often synonymous with hybrid or electric vehicles. Hybrid vehicles let users switch to either Eco Mode or EV Mode. Selecting eco mode allows the driver to increase efficiency by decreasing acceleration. EV mode refers to driving the car using only the battery for power. There also are cars that feature EcoBoost. Hybrid enthusiasts might wonder if EcoBoost cars are related to hybrids.

True EcoBoost engine vehicles are exclusive to Ford. Only this brand manufactures cars with the EcoBoost engine, and the term—which is a trademark—doesn’t have anything to do with hybrids.

What Ford vehicles offer EcoBoost engines?

  • Ford Edge
  • Ford Flex
  • Ford Fusion
  • Ford Mustang
  • Ford Escape
  • Ford Explorer
  • Ford F-150
  • Ford EcoSport
  • Ford Expedition

What is Unique about EcoBoost?

Many Ford dealerships delve into the ‘EcoBoost’ technology. EcoBoost refers to the construction or configuration of the engine, and the name is derived as a reference to fuel efficiency (Eco) and a charge of power (boost).

The EcoBoost engine is fuel injected; it does not combine or in any way utilize the power of a battery. What makes this engine unique is that it’s small in size yet powerful. Ford combined the fuel efficiency of a small engine with the power of a turbocharger.

Capital Ford Lincoln—a Ford dealership out of Lincoln, Neb.—explains how the engine works:

“By eliminating the intake tract used in conventional fuel injected engines, the Ford EcoBoost sends fuel directly into the combustion chamber, which reduces the amount of fuel wasted.”

Not only does it maximize fuel efficiency, but the dealership also explains that directly injecting the fuel offers more power for the engine. A diesel engine works in a similar fashion.

Is an EcoBoost Engine an Upgrade?

EcoBoost maximizes fuel efficiency and this benefit could be a key selling feature to those looking for a reliable vehicle for a long commute. For the Ford Edge, the EcoBoost engine is included for all trims. The Fusion also includes the engine. All Mustangs feature EcoBoost, and the Escape does, too.

All the listed models named above will feature EcoBoost, but buyers will need to research the model to find out if a specific EcoBoost engine is an upgraded feature. If the vehicle comes with a standard 1.5L EcoBoost, can that be upgraded to a 2.0L?

For the F-150, the EcoBoost engine might be an upgrade. However, pickup trucks often offer a variety of engine options to meet the specific towing and hauling needs of the buyer.

There are EcoBoost Hybrids, but Not in the U.S.

While the EcoBoost engine isn’t related to a hybrid design, this engine can be found in two of Ford’s hybrid models: Puma and Fiesta. For these models, the EcoBoost is actually a hybrid engine that pairs its already fuel-efficient design with the greater energy efficient offering of battery power.

In a press release, Ford described the new engine:

“Ford’s EcoBoost Hybrid technology uses a belt-driven integrated starter/generator (BISG) to recover energy usually lost during braking and coasting and charge a 48‑volt lithium-ion battery pack. The BISG also acts as a motor, integrating with the engine to provide torque assistance that can enhance fuel efficiency or performance, depending on the driving scenario.”

Unfortunately, the Puma—a small crossover— and the Fiesta are available only overseas.

EcoBoost Options are Abundant

As EcoBoost engines are featured on so many of Ford’s models, buyers can find the best model that fits their needs and their budget, too. Ford offers a variety of small, mid-size and larger vehicles.

In addition, the best-selling vehicle in the United States is Ford’s F-Series. Ford’s truck range offers some of the highest towing capacities on the market. The F-150 also can be equipped with EcoBoost.

Are EcoBoost Engines the Most Fuel Efficient?

Buyers who need the best car for a long commute or who want a vehicle that offers the best fuel efficiency should zero in on the MPG data for Ford’s models. While the EcoBoost can improve fuel efficiency, the estimated MPG might be the better indicator of a vehicle’s efficiency.

Baxter Ford includes a chart that shows the MPG data for the most fuel efficient Ford models. The 2021 Ford Escape Hybrid took the top spot—it offers 37 MPG. The standard Ford Escape offers 34 MPG, and the 2021 Ford EcoSport offers 29 MPG.

For standard fuel-injected engines, these are all respectable—and fairly efficient—figures. Buyers who want the most efficient Ford models might select either the Escape Hybrid or just the standard model.

However, hybrids and electric vehicles will almost always be the most energy-efficient options on the market. With electric models, though, buyers might focus more on the range of the vehicle. This can help buyers understand how far they can drive on a fully charged battery.

Hybrids offer MPGe data—this stands for miles per gallon equivalent. This number is read and translated the same as standard MPG. Manufacturers will typically note the estimated MPGe or estimated MPG.

Many hybrid vehicles can get an estimated 50 MPGe or more. Electric vehicles all feature different ranges, and a range often depends on the type of battery within the vehicle. The longest-range electric vehicle is the Lucid Air Dream Edition—the Range option can drive an estimated 520 miles on a fully charged battery.

MPG and MPGe can vary based on driving habits or other issues. A driver who pushes the speed limit will see lower MPG or MPGe figures than a driver who is more conservative. In addition, idling can affect fuel efficiency.

Use Carzing to Find Ford’s EcoBoost Models

Buyers who are interested in giving their drive a boost can use Carzing to find new and used Ford models that feature the EcoBoost engine. With Carzing, buyers can search for cars by make/model, body type or price.
