Toyota is one of the top-selling auto brands on the market. Car and Driver ranked the best-selling vehicles of 2021, and six Toyota models made the list. Not only do many of the brand’s models rank well for safety, but many are affordable, too.

For buyers researching Toyota, best gas mileage models also might be a factor in determining the best vehicle in the lineup. What are the most fuel efficient Toyota models? The manufacturer actually offers a page dedicated to their fuel efficient models, which include:

Many of Toyota’s models are offered in both a standard fuel-injected engine option and a hybrid. Toyota’s lineup also includes the Mirai, which is a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (only water is emitted). The Mirai can drive an estimated 76 MPGe in the city and 71 MPGe on the highway.

Toyota Cars with Good Gas Mileage

Toyota offers six different hybrid models, and the Prius is one of the brand’s most popular hybrids. Toyota’s minivan—the Sienna—also comes standard as a hybrid. The Sienna is only one of two hybrid minivans on the market; the Chrysler Pacifica also is offered as a hybrid.

Buyers who don’t want to spend more for a hybrid also can choose one of Toyota’s fuel-efficient standard models. The Avalon, Camry and Corolla all offer decent fuel efficiency both on the highway and in the city. Many hybrids offer better fuel efficiency in the city versus the highway—the reverse of what many drivers would expect.

Toyota Camry and Toyota Camry Hybrid

The Toyota Camry is the sixth most popular car in the U.S. More than 313,000 Camrys were sold in 2021. Like many of Toyota’s models, the Camry is offered in both a hybrid and standard option. The standard Camry has a base price of $25,395 and offers 28 MPG in the city and 39 MPG on the highway. The Camry Hybrid has a base price of $27,480 and offers an estimated 51 MPG on the highway and 53 MPG in the city.

The 2022 Toyota Camry received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This is the best safety rating awarded.

Toyota Prius and Toyota Prius Prime

The Toyota Prius was introduced in 1997, when the vehicle began to be associated with eco-conscious celebrities. The Prius is fairly budget-friendly with a base price of $24,625. It offers 58 MPG in the city and 53 MPG on the highway.

The Prius Prime is a plug-in hybrid and is slightly more expensive than the standard Prius. The Prime has a base price of $28,220. However, its fuel efficiency might make it worth the extra investment. The Prime can get an estimated 54 MPG, and, with the electric option, it also can get an estimated 133 MPGe. The Prime can drive an estimated 25 miles on electric mode (with a full charge).

Toyota Corolla, Toyota Corolla Hatchback, Toyota Corolla Hybrid

The Corolla is the 12th most popular vehicle in the U.S. (for 2021) and it’s also the most affordable Toyota model. The Corolla has a base price of $20,175, the Corolla Hatchback has a base price of $20,915, and the Corolla Hybrid is offered at a base price of $23,750.

The model is offered in a standard sedan, a hatchback and a hybrid. The standard Corolla can get an estimated 31 MPG in the city and 40 MPG on the highway. The hatchback is a bit more efficient, getting an estimated 32 MPG in the city and 41 MPG on the highway. The Corolla Hybrid is the most fuel efficient and gets an estimated 53 MPG on the city and 52 MPG on the highway.

The Corolla and Corolla Hatchback (models built after November 2021) received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.

Toyota Avalon and Toyota Avalon Hybrid

The Avalon is Toyota’s larger sedan, and it’s also the higher-end priced model. The Avalon has a base price of $36,375 and the Avalon Hybrid has a base price of $37,350.

Since the Avalon is a larger sedan, it isn’t the most fuel efficient option. The standard Avalon offers an estimated 22 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on the highway. However, the Avalon Hybrid offers an estimated 43 MPG in the city and 44 MPG on the highway.

The 2022 Toyota Avalon received a Top Safety Pick rating (when equipped with certain headlights) from the IIHS.

Toyota Sienna

The Toyota Sienna is only one of four minivans left on the market, and it’s also one of the most fuel efficient. The Sienna offers an estimated 36 MPG combined, and it is a hybrid model. The 2022 Sienna received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.

Why Do Hybrid Have Better Fuel Efficiency in the City?

Some buyers might notice that Toyota hybrid models get better fuel efficiency in the city than on the highway. For most cars, highway driving leads to greater fuel efficiency. Why are the numbers reversed for hybrids?

The reason standard vehicles perform less efficiently in the city is due to the stop and go nature of driving on city streets. Cars have to pause at stoplights, they idle, and traffic might be a bit more congested.

Hybrids don’t have the same issues with the stop-and-go driving in the city. The ‘regenerative braking’ of a hybrid makes them more efficient when driving in the city. Hybrids also offer additional features that make them more fuel efficient on city streets.

For drivers that typically do most of their commuting or daily driving in the city, hybrids may be the best type of vehicle to maximize MPG.
